Getting Set Up

If you are renting accommodation independently you have to pay Council Tax. However you be exempted if you are studying a minimum of 21 hours or more. Details are available in your student handbook as well as from the Student Support Office who can provide you with a letter to give to your landlord or local Council.

The Student Support Office can provide letters that will help you to open a bank account and get a direct debit card which is necessary if you would like to apply for a Student Oyster Card.

A NUS (National Union of Students) card gives you discounts on food and clothing. You can apply for a card online at www.nus.org.uk. The cost is £10.00. A Student Oyster Card allows you to travel around London on the underground, buses and trains at a 30% discount. You can apply online at www.oystercard.co.uk. You will need to upload your enrolment letter, a passport photo and also pay £5 by debit card or credit card.

You may need to register with the Overseas Visitors Records Office (www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visitingtheuk/) which must be done within 7 days of arrival into the country. This requirement will be written in your passport if applicable. You will need to provide your passport, travel documents, enrolment letters, proof of address and any Home Office letters. There is also a registration fee of £34.00.
